Ruth Vreeland Memorial Ocean Education Scholarship Fund

The Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation (MBSF) and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Program (MBNMS) established the Ruth Vreeland Memorial Ocean Education Scholarship Fund in tribute to the memory of longtime Monterey City Councilwoman and Sanctuary Advisory Council member Ruth Vreeland.

In keeping with Mrs. Vreeland’s love of youth education and ocean conservation, the fund targets ocean and coastal programs for youth. A formal application process has been established and applicants are encouraged to address underserved communities and young woman in their program proposals. The program crosses multiple counties and encourages diverse participation. Five ocean education programs will each receive a $1,000 award this year. A total of $5,000 will be available each year for three to four years based on current donations. Along with individual donors, the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the National Marine Sanctuary Program (NMSP) and NOAA’s B-Wet grant program have contributed funds.
