Monterey
Bay Sanctuary Foundation Representative Programs
RESEARCH
SIMoN
A comprehensive plan to conduct and integrate ecosystem-monitoring activities throughout the Sanctuary. The MBSF performs a fiscal sponsorship role in close cooperation with the MBNMS and an independent science advisory committee. Substantial funding has been committed to these initiatives. More detail on SIMoN is available separately.
National Marine Protected Areas Center - Science Institute (NMPAC-SI)
Funds to support the
design, management, research and administration of Marine Protected
Areas, in conjunction with the new NOAA NPPAC_SI Center in Santa Cruz,
CA. Extensive work is underway to establish and communicate best
practices in evaluating, creating and managing MPAs.
Point
Pinos Tidepool Research Project
Serving as a fiscal sponsor for
the research project into the human impacts on tidepools in the Pacific
Grove, CA area. Working closely with a citizen group created as a Task
Force, the project assessed the impacts of human interactions with
the tidepools and made recommendations for management of them. Completed - June 2003 (funded by
The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, City of Pacific Grove, and
the MBNMS).
EDUCATION
MERITO
(Multicultural Education for Resource Issues Threatening Oceans)
An initiative to reach and educate under-served segments of the population,
with a preliminary focus on the Latino Community of Monterey County.
Preliminary funding has been awarded from The Community Foundation for
Monterey County. Additional funding is being provided by NOAAs
Marine Sanctuary Program with expectations that the MERITO program may
be implemented at other sanctuaries nationwide.
Save
Our Seas A project created with the California Coastal Commission
to support the revision of their classroom curriculum entitled Save
Our Seas.

Threatened
and Thriving Conservation Series
A fund used in creating, distributing
and marketing educational products that feature threatened and thriving
species of the MBNMS. The program will include posters, a childrens
calendar and other education offerings. The Vital Spark Foundation and
NOAA provided initial funding for the program.
EDUCATIONAL
PRODUCTS
The
Foundation, in collaboration with NOAA's Monterey Bay National Marine
Sanctuary office, is helping create an identity for the Sanctuary. This
includes the production and distribution of Sanctuary educational materials:
RESOURCE
PROTECTION
Agriculture
and Rural Lands Plan Implementation
The plan represents an
innovative and collaborative approach to protecting the resources of
the Sanctuary and its watersheds. At the heart of the plan are 24 strategies
to address agricultural sources of polluted runoff such as sediments,
nitrates and pesticides. The strategies are intended to protect and
enhance the quality of water that drains into the Sanctuary, while sustaining
the economic viability of the regions substantial agricultural
industry. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the State
Water Resources Control Board and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary
have funded this program.
Citizen
Watershed Monitoring Network
a consortium of approximately
twenty citizen monitoring groups that monitor the health of the watersheds
flowing into the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. It was established
in 1997 and has since provided support, training, and a central forum
and database for citizen monitoring programs. The Network also coordinates
two annual regional monitoring events, First Flush in the fall and Snapshot
Day in the spring. The State Water Resources Control Board, the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, the California Coastal Commission,
the City of Pacific Grove, and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary
have funded this program.
