On November 1-2, 2008 an impressive array of education and interpretation representatives from the premier ocean and coastal educational organizations in Central California assembled for the Train the Trainers Workshop in Monterey, CA. This workshop was designed to enhance marine protected area (MPA) education and outreach along the central coast, and to enhance understanding and support of MPAs in the general public and among key stakeholders.
The weekend workshop included presentations on interpretation, communication and message framing of MPAs; the science of marine protected areas; and their political, economic and cultural significance. Special sessions scheduled introduce tools to communicate and interpret MPAs and provide instructions on how to best train docents and volunteers. The work completed during this workshop helps support the development and refinement of additional training products, materials and resources that will be available to all participants.
